It’s everywhere… on TV, the radio, in magazines, my email, my snail mail, highways, public bathrooms, public schools and even the doctor’s office. Everyday, in just about any place I look, there are more and more ads urging me to improve my face, my body, my car, my house, my job, and even my pet. Nothing is good enough anymore. I shouldn’t be satisfied with bnaughty dating site what I have and contentment is a sin. Advertising is so rampant now, my dreams have commercial breaks. “This all-natural cream will make you look 10 years younger in just three weeks!” “Just follow my simple five-step program and you can become a millionaire overnight!”
“A six-pack in only six weeks with the Ballistic Belly Blaster, guaranteed!” Well, I am getting a little older, and I’ll admit my abs could use some work. And who doesn’t want to be a millionaire? Maybe if I buy enough of these products, I will look like a former sitcom or soap opera star. Then I could sell my own line of makeover products and get rich. After that, I can develop and market my own money-making scheme and get richer. Yeah, that’s it! “You are only as alive as the car you drive.” “Diamonds are a woman’s best friend.” With all these new-found riches, I will wear the latest fashions and drive the hottest cars. My hair and nails will be done up in the latest styles at the finest salons. No more waiting in line at the trendiest clubs and restaurants. My summer villa will be featured in architectural magazines. Soon, everyone will want to look like me, act like me and be like me. Department stores will carry my lines of beauty creams, perfumes and love potions. Boutiques will feature the latest styles of my pret-a-porter clothing.
Chinese knock-offs will bombard the discount super centers, and I will walk down the street and see myself in everyone that passes by. “Stop the insanity!” Whoa! I almost found myself reaching for the credit card. With every ad that criticizes my looks and my lifestyle, my ego is diminished a little bit more, and my desire to be “new and improved” increases. The application for an extreme makeover is sitting on my desk. I don’t know how much longer I can resist the temptation. But what would happen if I did give in to it? What if we all did? Do we really want to live in a world full of Kens and Barbies? Well, maybe that wouldn’t be so bad. At least I’d be beautiful. “Stay tuned.
